Routes to The Priory, Luccombe Road, Shanklin, IOW, PO37 6RR There are three vehicle ferries, run by two companies Wightlink – www.wightlink.co.uk/ 0871 376 1000 Lymington – Yarmouth, IOW (takes half an hour, runs almost every 40 minutes) Portsmouth – Fishbourne, IOW (takes half an hour, runs almost every half hour)
Red Funnel – www.redfunnel.co.uk 0844 844 9988 Southampton – East Cowes, IOW (takes an hour, runs almost every hour)
Southampton and Portsmouth will take 20 to 30 minutes to negotiate the numerous turns to reach the ports. Lymington and the Island ports are much smaller and are reached very quickly.
To help you to choose a ferry time, it may help to know that The Priory will be ready for you by 3 o'clock, and we ask you to be ready to leave at 10.30am when our housekeeper will call and collect your key. Some visitors take in a beach, walk on the downs, theme park, stately home or garden on the Island in the middle of the first and last days.
Ferry booking on line is usually cheaper than by phone. Although a longer voyage, Red Funnel is often cheaper than Wightlink. So long as you book a week ahead, they will post your tickets to you. Otherwise you collect them at the port ticket offices. Both ferries are laidback if you arrive early or late. Except in very busy summer times, you can usually catch the next sailing without changing your ticket.
The most enchanting approach to The Priory is from Yarmouth via Brook, and along the “Military Road” that runs along the South West coast past Blackgang Chine, St Catherine’s lighthouse, Niton and Ventnor, and winds down to Shanklin. Pass St Blasius church on your left, and just before the 20 mph speed limit sign turn right into Priory Road. At the end of this short road turn right, and The Priory (two houses AFTER Priory School) is the last building on your left.
If you prefer the main road from Yarmouth, or if you cross to East Cowes or Fishbourne, you have a choice of following the map through the lanes (signposted Sandown and Shanklin), or taking the A3054 main road to Newport and then the A3020 through Rookley and Godshill to Shanklin. Go to the traffic lights and turn right. Go through the 20mph limit area of thatched properties, and turn left into Priory Road. At the end of this short road turn right, and The Priory (two houses AFTER Priory School) is the last building on your left.
On-Line maps and Satnav should take you to the house at PO37 6RR.
The Isle of Wight measures 23 miles from West to East, and 13 miles North to South, so where ever you are on the Island, it is not very far.
